Autism & Over-Protection

My son has high-functioning autism and AD/HD. He is almost 14 in years but has the maturity level of maybe a 10-11 yr old. How much of that is caused by my "over-protectiveness," as my husband and brother call it? How much can a parent protect an innocent child from outside influences before crippling the child? Parenting is the hardest job in the world, the most rewarding, but extremely difficult to know the right things to do. Why don't they come with a handbook? To get a driver's license, there is a book to study and a test to be taken. But not with a much more important responsibility - parenthood. Strange, isn't it?
